Climate Change – How can the Internet of Things help us

June 4, 2019

Climate Change – Over the past few years IOT as technology has grown leaps and bounds. The world of IOT expanded beyond connected wearables, water bottle and bulbs to solving more pertaining and immediate threats and in providing wide-ranging strategic solutions. One such critical vertical where IOT is creating effective impact is in climate change

What is happening with Climate change?

There is irrefutable evidence that climate change is true and happening, global temperatures are rising, oceans are warming, the ice sheets shrinking, snow cover is decreasing, sea level is rising.  These are happening very fast and needs immediate action before it becomes irreversible.

One of the way forward to manage climate change is to use technology to help mitigate the impact. IOT can play a vital role in monitoring and contribute significantly to the climate change crisis. With its ability to use sensors to collect real-time data and processing this data to take effective action, IOT will be the technology that can help to tackle climate change in more ways than imaginable. Industries and Government can monitor the data collected by the sensor and drive action which could have long term impact.

Potential ways to reduce carbon footprint through IOT

One Way to monitor the carbon emission is setup city-wide sensor network to track the carbon level. This can be integrated into the citizen information system, through phone apps and other ways and can be used to send out alerts on the carbon levels in the cities. This can help in driving awareness among the citizens and promote actions.

Similarly Using traffic sensor to monitor the traffic level and sending the information in a given area could drive efficiency in rerouting the traffic reduce the travel time and parking wait times and in turn can help in reducing the carbon level.

The smart grid is another efficient IOT enabled way to reduce greenhouse emission. A smart meter is a way to tell consumers how much energy wasted and inform of ways to conserve the energy

Another domain that could potentially benefit from IOT enabled the system in reducing the carbon footprint is implementing  sensors in the fleet and measuring how much emission is contributed by them

Smart agriculture AND Precision agriculture can help in reducing the wastage of water, minimize the use of pesticide.

IOT can generate an overwhelming amount of data these data can help to drive to take actions by the government by Industries.  Based on the data from the Government can set carbon compliance requirement and enforce actions like reduced carbon emission requirement of vehicle or alert to use public transport and so one.

The key in all these is how the companies, government, and environmental agencies use the climate data generated by IOT devices to monitor and act in an effective way to today to save the earth from the impact of climate change.
